Introduction by the Chair of Department
The Department of Health Sciences is one of the three (3) departments in the School of Agriculture, Environment and Health Sciences. Currently, the Department offers two (2) undergraduate programmes:
Bachelor of Science Food, Nutrition and Dietetics
Bachelor of Science Public Health
These two programs were envisaged due to emerging nutrition and health problems. Nutrition and public health are interrelated subjects that focus on improving the health and nutritional status of individuals and even community through quality teaching, research, innovations, community engagements and service the department trains personnel with the capacity to deal with nutrition and health issues and hence bridge the existing capacity gaps in health and nutrition programmes and even in Kenya’s realization of vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Currently, the Department has one Senior Lecturer (PhD Holder), 2 Lecturers (PhD holders), 3 Tutorial Fellows, 1 part-time lecturer and one (1) non-teaching staff member. Additionally, the department is supported by laboratory technicians from various fields including food microbiology, chemistry, human anatomy and physiology among others.
